Avatar: The Last Airbender Being Removed from Netflix Instant on May 22nd

When I was browsing Netflix Instant yesterday after school, I came across something rather shocking. Netflix announced that they would be removing Avatar: The Last Airbender from their Instant Streaming selection on May 22nd. The reason why this comes as a surprise is because Avatar: The Last Airbender has been on the Netflix Instant for years now. Not seeing it under my favorites anymore will be a bit strange on the 22nd. It looks like I’ll need to find another source for my Avatar Marathons. Hulu, perhaps?

For Netflix, removing Avatar: The Last Airbender from their Instant Queue was probably a move they’d been planning for some time now. When Netflix loses the license to a show, they have to decide whether or not they want to renew it. That decision is heavily determined by how many people are actually watching the show on Netflix. If only a small population is watching the show, Netflix generally tends to not renew the show.

Losing Avatar: The Last Airbender from Netflix Instant may seem like a surprise to us, but if you look at the situation from a technical perspective, the move probably made a lot of sense.

So if you’re an avid Netflix user who enjoys watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, time is running out. Take advantage of the series now.

And in case you care, I ended up watching Footloose. Julianne Hough is HOT.

Don’t forget to purchase the Book 2 DVD if you enjoyed it.

for real screw netflix. i dont think they have added a single new movie to instant in the last 3 months, and then they want to take avatar off. to make room for what? some b movie no one has ever heard of. oh hey we have thousands of instant movies, but you dont find out they all suck until after you get the service and you have to order anything that is good. whatever, you can watch every single episode on the internet, and the internet is not going anywhere. but besides that, good thing i recorded the entire series of atla and korra on dvr. hahaha they will never go anywhere, got em for life, for free, and i can faster forward through the commercial. haha i am melon lord!!!

It is not strange. It was planned. Exactly a month before this May 22nd cancellation, LA times ran a story on April 22nd: “Netflix said it plans to let its deal to carry Nickelodeon, BET and MTV content expire next month, even though it continues to discuss licensing certain shows.” I guess ATLA did not make the cut. Sorry.

  • josh

hey keval, i dont know if you know this or not, but bryan konietzko posted a foley demo on his tumblr, im about to watch it its like 1:45 long.

    • josh

and of course, its of season one, how dissappointing. but its still pretty cool at the same time.

      • josh

eewww, those bloodbending noises in part two always made me cringe.. uuugghh disgusting. i dont know what the hell that is but damn.

  • Korra1225

i know a couple of websites that show full episodes of avatar for free
    http://dubbed-scene.com

    http://www.watchcartoononline.com/cartoon-list

  • Kyle Edgecomb

I’ve got the series on DVD anyway, so I’m not bothered about this

  • Darkscythe

It’s not just Avatar, its anything Nickelodeon I think. Netflix isn’t renewing their contract with Viacom (Nicks Parent Company) because Viacom want more money. At least thats how its been explained to me.

  • Hawky the messenger hawk

EVERYONE!, NEWS FROM THE GREAT BRYAN KONIETZKO HAS ARRIVED. HERE ARE HIS DIVINE WORDS:
Sorry again for the lack of posts! Our production schedule is simply brutal as we are working on Books 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously, and I have little time for anything else once I try to fit “being a human being” in there. Such is the nature of TV production and its protracted, overlapping schedules… Despite the absence and the delays (which are all symptomatic of The Difficulty of Making Animation and little or nothing else), I would (as I have in the past) humbly ask you for your continued patience: It is a good year to be a Korra fan, and a lot of great stuff is coming down the pipeline that we are excited to announce (when we are permitted to announce it) and to share with you all. Thanks, sincerely!

    • Space Oddity

looks like he’s mad at Nick too…

    • Avatar/KorraFan9150

I’m surprised Keval hasn’t made an article about that. It’s pretty much important news. We know that Book 2, 3 and 4 are all being into work. And that this year we’ll get something out of Book 2 and probably the other Books at Comic Con.

  • daniel yefru

no news reporto on dis or youtubers because of lack of news given so this is the korra dark age

  • Brent Roberts

    go to avatarportal.org

the ultimate Avatar fan site with every episode on there, of both ATLA and Korra

    • Brent Roberts

      sorry theavatarportal.org

  • Rachel

When we saw that Avatar was being removed from netflix my hubby
instantly called netflix. Their response was that this does happen from
time to time as they renew their contracts with various companies but
the more people that request it the quicker they will renew. Or
    something like that.

“If you look at the situation from a technical perspective…” What perspective? Conjecture? The article is pure speculation and reads like it was written by a 5th grader. If you’re going to offer up reasons why Avatar was removed from Netflix, provide concrete details, please.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

The perspective of the executives from Netflix. Clearly you do not understand how they run their business. Idiot.

  • Allison Straw

wow, lame. first wonder pets for my kid and now avatar what are you doing Netflix? thinkin of just cancelling the account at this point… :(

  • Bailey

I was so upset when I went on nexflix just to find that avatar wasn’t there anymore. That was the only reason I went on Netflix because I would have avatar marathons lol. But it’s so upsetting to me because I loved that show so much and I don’t know where to watch the episodes now…. Nexflix has just lost a member. :(

    • Pinback_Sherman

      Buy them?

    • Treezy 9866

Yeah thats some real bs but it shows on nicktoons network if you have it

  • Tearbender

Avatar has to come back! That show is my life…

  • Maximus Jones

I remember the good old days when Netflix actually had something on their list… THose days are LONG behind us now. Good job, Netflix, UNSUBSCRIBING.

  • Pinback_Sherman

I’m pretty sure they lost the deal to all Nick shows. Or let them go.

  • Name

Maybe I should just stop this membership to netflix. They’re taking away everything good! Now south park is freaking gone, avatar is gone, x-men evolution is gone.

Those three shows plus family guy were my favorite ones!!!!

And now all I’ve got left is family guy, which I’ve already watched all the episodes twice, and 3 times for many of them.

Of course right when i want to watch those other three shows, they’re suddenly gone. Wish I’d watched them first. Now i have to watch them on some other crappy website full of ads, bad quality, and extreme lag, as well as having to wait hours for the bar to load so i can watch it.

    Fuck.

  • Ali

Why did you move avatar its the best movie in my life? Please put it back.

  • sky

You people do realise that it was not netflix that took it off, there contract expired and the people who own avatar refused to renew it.

  • Cold Iron Chef

It’s Aug 26, 2013 and it is still availible to stream, with no notices to have it removed. Also, as for all the comments reguarding “Screw Netflix for taking it down” It’s probably not Netflix’s fault. They sign contract with studios and distributers for thier content, if anything blame Nickeloden for not allowing Netflix to renew the contact. Netflix has a vested interest in keeping as much contant as they can, it’s how they sell thier service. It would be a seriously bad buisness move for them to an extremly popular show like Avatar! Don’t panic. Besides, I’m just happy it’s up there at all.

  • Chunk Basker

wtf wouldn’t they renew this show? I’ve watched all 3 books at least 5 times each. This show never gets old.

  • Tanja Kürstein Andersen

we still have avatar in the danish version(on english), and if you use unlocator.com… you can choose between all versions of netflix(for now it’s beta and therefore free)
