Yesterday evening, the ratings for episode 5 ‘Peacekeepers’ were released. Upon review, I thought the number released was a typo, but it wasn’t – episode 5 had brought in a measly 1.1 million views. Book 2’s rating were never impressive, but they were still higher than most shows Nickelodeon aired. This week’s ratings spelled disaster. 1.1 million views are the lowest ratings an episode of The Legend of Korra has ever pulled in. In comparison to last week, Book 2’s ratings have dropped off by 50%.
That’s not good; not good at all. But I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. I certainly didn’t expect the ratings to plummet like this, but it would’ve been unrealistic to expect Book 2’s ratings to increase after Nickelodeon changed its time slot.
Changing the time slot of a show is dangerous because you don’t necessarily know how many weekly viewers will get the message. In this case, I think it’s safe to say that not many Legend of Korra fans knew Book 2 would be airing at 8:30 pm EST.
Now may seem like the most opportune time to hit the panic button, but we’re not there yet. Next week will be a good indicator of where this show sits in terms of popularity. By then, Nickelodeon will have had another full week to spread the word about the time change.
If Book 2’s ratings manage to drop even further, there could be trouble.
I’m on record of saying that there’s no chance of The Legend of Korra being cancelled and I stand by that. But if Book 2’s ratings drop below 1 million, Nickelodeon will be in panic mode. That’s less than what a repeat episode gets.
Hopefully Nickelodeon steps up their marketing campaign and fixes this mess.
