Character Development of Asami Sato in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra [Update]

When Book 2 finally roles around, the character I expect to be the most developed is undoubtedly Asami Sato. Asami’s role in Book 1 was mainly focused around the whole aspect of shipping: she was with Mako in the beginning, and then dumped for Korra in the end. Asami just seemed like the character that could take the hits, but never deliver the blows. But that was Asami then. The Asami that we’ll see in Book 2 will be much different.

If you think back to Asami’s character in the beginning of the series, you’ll remember an average girl who just happened to be filthy rich since her father, Hiroshi Sato, developed the Satomobile. She lost her mother by the hands of the Agni Kai Triad, but her quality of life still seemed rather fine – for the most part.

Unfortunately for Asami, her life will never be the same after the events of Book 1. According to Mike and Bryan, she’ll face even more hardship and responsibility at the beginning of Book 2. Luckily for us, hardship almost always means character development.

Throughout the course of Book 2, Asami will have to deal with the pain of Mako and Korra being together, endure the hardship of really having no parental guidance since her father is now in prison, and hold the responsibility of running Future Industries on her own.

Asami’s character will need to develop quickly in order have any chance of enduring all of these obstacles, but this could be a good thing for the fan base. One of the biggest knocks fans have had on Book 1 of The Legend of Korra is the lack of character development. After all, The Last Airbender was praised for its amazing character development. The fact that The Legend of Korra lacks an element that The Last Airbender thrived in is a bit disappointing.

Fortunately for us, it looks like Asami’s character, at the very least, will be much further developed in Book 2. Hopefully we’ll see some more of the same thing for the other characters as well – Mako specifically.

Update: Just created my first YouTube video about this topic. Check it out:

I think people are jumping the gun on, "Oh LoK doesn't have any character development". Airbender didn't have big character development in the first 12 episodes of book 1. People need to relax and realize character development takes time, through multiple episodes and multiple books. Great post tho!

Yeah I agree. The character development wasn't the greatest in Book 1, but what can you expect in just 12 episodes? It'll get better over time.

Just to confirm about LoK coming out in April. There's no official source(obviously) but LoK started in April so obviously it will be the same time in 2013.Naturally, I just wait for official info for that but it's the same thing with video game franchise they come out around the same time.As for Asami *sigh* I don't mind her at all but she's not my favorite character. obviously with 12 ep and only 2 writers you can't expect a lot of character dev and that apply to mako and asami and a bunch of other characters except bolin and other characters that I would make a list for if asked.

Yeah, April is not the confirmed date, it is just the speculated date that I would call "all but confirmed".

      Thanks for commenting.

Bolin barely had any character development either. He's just static comic relief. What are you talking about?

Oh and Asami being able to overcome alot of hardships and preserve her integrity while doing it makes her one of my favorite characters. Who am I kidding? She is my favorite female from the show. Hopefully the future episodes have something in store for her.

Yeah, I feel like they kind of wasted Asami's character in Book 1. She has a lot of potential. Hopefully they use her for reasons OTHER than shipping.
