Legend of Korra Book 1: Air DVD and Blu-ray Edition Confirmed for July

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything official about Book 1’s DVD. The last we heard of it was that the voice actors were finishing up commentaries for the special features section of the DVD. Today, we received the last bit of remaining details.

Firstly, the DVD will be hitting stores on July 16th. This is still a bit disappointing since we heard back in November that the DVD would be “coming soon.” I’m not sure that 8 months can be considered “soon”, but whatever; at least we finally know one of the release dates.

Another interesting bit of news is that Book 1 will also be coming to Blu-ray. The Legend of Korra is reportedly the first series that Nickelodeon will bring to Blu-ray, so I guess it’s fair to say that the Network has giving the series a bit of love in that department.

Unfortunately, if you want to take full advantage of all the special features, you will be required to purchase the Blu-ray version. Commentary on all 12 episodes will be exclusive to the Blu-ray version, but the DVD version will still have a select variety of the commentary. There will also be an Original Puppetbender short film called The Making of a Legend: The Untold Story, which will be available on the DVD version as well.

This whole ploy to add more bonus content on the Blu-ray edition is a complete scam that Nickelodeon has cooked up perfectly. Blu-ray looks incredible, there’s no doubting that, but an animated series such as The Legend of Korra can only look so clear. At best, The Legend of Korra will look slightly better on Blu-ray as opposed to DVD. You probably won’t even be able to tell the difference. But in order to help customers avoid that whole thought process, Nickelodeon drops the “exclusive” bomb and pretty much force feeds Blu-ray to the fandom. More money for them.

Oh well.

One concern I have is that Amazon has been letting people pre-order the DVD for quite some time now. However, no one was ever given the option to purchase the Blu-ray edition. Will Amazon give buyers the opportunity to upgrade? With the Blu-ray version being the better buy, Amazon will likely take a lot of heat from the fandom if everyone who pre-ordered Book 1 is stuck with the DVD edition. Hopefully it all gets straightened out soon.

Are you going to be purchasing the DVD or Blu-ray Edition? Purchase it through Amazon with THIS LINK so I get some money (commission)!

I’m pretty sure the Blu-Ray edition will look miles better than the DVD in picture quality. The DVD is only 480p standard definition where the Blu-Ray is 1080p high-definition. That’s a huge difference in terms of clarity and the colors should even be more vibrant and vivid. I’m glad they’re doing this though, since a series with animation quality like Korra’s deserves to be available in HD. I guess they’re just adding the extra content to the Blu-Ray because its the overall higher quality product.

I just assumed that the DVD would be in HD. Am I wrong?

By the way, HD and Blu-ray are two separate things.

      • JB

As far as I know, DVDs only support standard definition because they don’t have enough space to hold HD content. I was thinking the difference would be that DVD would be like watching it on the standard definition Nick network feed, where Blu-ray would be like watching it on the HD network feed.

Yeah I’m not too sure, actually. Oh well, whatever, July 16th. Bonus content. That is all.

    • Nico

Ya i have to agree. Blu ray is easily superior to DVD. I don’t even watch movies on DVD anymore because they don’t look good to me. And how much more are you really paying for the Blu ray? Less than 10 dollars. Can’t wait though, really excited.

    • MitchGunner

I agree with you that the colors will probably be more vibrant, and the sound may even be a little better, but I don’t kno about the picture quality. The reason Blu Ray looks sod good is because it increases the overall clarity of the DVD, which can make blurry, simple hair on a person look much more define and etc. but cartoons are already composed of very define details. They’re made up of clean lines and geometic structures already. That’s why I’m skeptical. I would probably get it on DVD personally.

I hope this isn’t what the voice actors said to get excited for.

I already pre-ordered the DVD oh well :(. You know what’s even more sad?? I decided to look on Bolin’s facebook page and there’s a picture of a tweet from Janet Varney saying Book 2 was confirmed for a mid-April release. Not sure if that’s what everyone was referring to when she tweeted about Book 2, but it sure as hell still makes me disappointed because mid-Arpril is almost upon us D:

Yeah that mid-April rumor turned out to be false. Lots of hype surrounding that. Lots of disappointment.

    Nice new style!

Its really cool, I’m glad they put some other characters on there. I don’t know if I would have put Tarlock next to Amon tho, kinda spoilerish. Maybe i just think that way cuz I know who they are.

  • DunbansBiggestFanForever

This is great news for me cause I’ve never seen Korra yet and I’ve been dying for this DVD. I’ve pre-ordered so I’m ready for the 27th!!!

I am actually thinking of buying the blu-ray and i never buy movies. at the same time I might wait it out until I can get better options for it. for instance, they might eventually combine the seasons (book 1 and 2, then book 3 and 4), and I’m sure that they will have special editions when they come out with the other dvd’s later on. basically, more exclusive stuff. like with atla, they have them all chopped up onto like 6 or more dvd’s, or you can buy them with the entire book and better special features, and its only 3 dvd’s.

  • Filmeditor16

I’m a little hesitant buying it. I mean, I don’t have a blue ray player, I don’t really watch DVDs, and I bought the whole season in advance on iTunes as soon as it was available. I might buy it just for the purpose of lending it out to friends who want to see it, or I might teach a class on it at school next year. (Yeah, I can do that, I just have to link it to something the least bit educational, like maybe how it’s made or the different brand of cultures mixed into it.) I don’t know, it depends. But I’ll try to but it through you if I can.

  • Kyle Edgecomb

Well I live in UK, and already watched the first series online, but I don’t want to have to buy a region 1 dvd, I’d rather wait until it comes out here

  • josh

I just realized that this is what they could have been talking about getting excited for for april… please excuse me but i’m not excited, i’ve seen the whole first book, like alot, i want book 2, that is the only thing to get excited for, or maybe if mike and bryan decided to stop being so nice about what m night did to their movie franchise, and kicked him in the face, and got a different director to make another one.

  • DunbansBiggestFanForever

they should change the box art.

  • Kotomi Ichinose

Okay. I might need to save up money for this Blu-ray. Well played, Nick.

  • Andreas

Are you really complaining about Korra being on Blu Ray? Really? I personally am ECSTATIC! Blu Ray was MADE for animation this gorgeous. The DVD will not be able to display that nearly as well.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

No I’m complaining that people who don’t own Blu-Ray players are effectively screwed. They won’t be able to enjoy the bonus content even if they wanted to without dropping a few extra $100.

      • Andreas

It’s standard practice these days. Blu Ray = More content

Besides, Blu Ray has been around for what 7 years now? I think people who wanted a player has one by now.

I was afraid we’d never see a BD release of ‘Korra’ so i’m just happy Nickelodeon decided to give us one!
