Legend of Korra Book 2 DVD/Blu-Ray Release Date & Special Features

IGN ended up getting the exclusive first look at The Legend of Korra Book 2’s DVD, as expected, and it appears as though Summer will get off to a nice start for Korra fans.

The Book 2 DVD hits shelves on July 1st, which is a bit surprising to me since I was under the impression that July 1st was a placeholder date.

Before the release date of the Book 1 DVD was officially announced last year, Amazon published a release date for the DVD that was thought to be confirmed. Contrary to popular belief, the release date Amazon had published was a placeholder date and the actual release date was many months in advance. So, shout-out to Amazon for not sending the Korra community into a frenzy of disappointment again.

IGN released a whole slew of special features that come with the DVD, but I have to be honest: I’m not particularly interested in any one of them. They’ll be interesting to watch in my spare time, no doubt, but what I’m more interested in seeing is Beginnings – Part 1 & 2 in crystal-clear Blu-Ray. I’m a bit of an artsy, visualistic kind of guy, so content like that excites me.

For those who are actually interested in the special features included in the DVD, here is a rundown of what will be available for your viewing pleasure in the Blu-Ray edition:

  • Audio commentary from cast, crew and creators (14 episodes)
  • Behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of 17 Book 2 bending scenes (story concepts, scripting, animation, etc.)
  • Extended Book 1 recap including 30 minutes of video clips
  • Interview with the co-creators analyzing Tenzin’s familial relationships with his children and siblings
  • Interview with the co-creators analyzing Korra’s family dynamics

Here is a rundown of the special features included in the standard (non-Blu-Ray) edition:

  • Audio commentary from cast, crew and creators (4 episodes – can you say “gypped?”)
  • Behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of 2 Book 2 bending scenes (story concepts, scripting, animation, etc.)
  • Interview with the co-creators analyzing Korra’s family dynamics

As you can probably tell, Nickelodeon is once again giving fans huge incentive to purchase the Blu-Ray edition over the standard edition – which will result in a better revenue stream for them because the Blu-Ray edition is far more expensive.

If you care for my input, I would pick up the Blu-Ray edition regardless of the special features simply because I think the enhanced quality is worth the extra bills. Not to mention the Blu-Ray edition also enhances sound quality.

In my personal opinion, the only significant features the standard edition is missing that the Blu-Ray edition has is the in-depth look at Tenzin’s familial relationships and the audio commentary for all 14 episodes.

The extended Book 1 recap is virtually useless because you could always spend a couple of hours and marathon all 12 episodes instead. It’s seriously not that long of a season. Besides, if you thoroughly enjoyed the season, why would you want to watch a recap of it as opposed to the actual episodes?

The reduction in behind-the-scenes looks is a bit of a joke, in my opinion. While there is a difference of 15 behind-the-scenes looks, they’re all going to be virtually the same thing. It’s the same process of writing, story boarding and animation with just a different scene every time.

The fact that the standard edition only has audio commentary for 4 of the 14 episodes is a bit mean. I’d say getting the Blu-Ray edition solely for the extra 10 commentary sessions is worth it, even though you’d be falling directly into Nickelodeon’s trap.

If you’re simply looking to re-watch the season from time-to-time, I’d suggest purchasing the standard edition as it is much cheaper and serves your purpose well. If you plan on watching all the special features and truly loved Book 2 to death, I’d recommend dropping the extra bills and getting the Blu-Ray edition.

Ultimately, the choice is yours, so choose wisely:

Purchase The Legend of Korra Book 2 – Standard Edition

I dont know. I cant see the difference between Blu Ray and DVD. On an HDTV (which they all are nowadays), you just cant see the difference…

The disks are stronger though, so that’s a plus…

    • Aang

no no there is a difference in the quality in blu-ray it is 1080p!!!

  • Nico

The bluray isn’t that much more expensive than the DVD. We’re talking about 5 dollars really.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

Check the links I posted to Amazon. Blu-Ray is double the price.

      • Nico

Ya but I remember when I bought the book 1 blu ray last year. It went on sale at Walmart the first day it came out for 19.99 and the DVD was 14.99. Im sure they’ll do something like that again.

        • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

If you decide to pre-order, like many people are doing, expense becomes a factor because a major discount hasn’t been implemented yet.

          • Jack Spaulding

But they are always lowered to price match is lowest selling point. This includes all big retailers who are open for pre-order ATM. (Best Buy and Amazon)

  • Ariana Moreno

Yep, my sis preordered the regular dvd for me for Christmas X) i honestly don’t really care about all that extra stuff, i only watch the episodes. and not only that, but book 2 will be just an enjoyable thing for me to watch on my free time when there is nothing else going on XD and i’m also looking forward to the art book for book 2!! bring it babbeeeeehhh Xp (i’m probably gonna skip stuff with nuktuk and the sting though XD ) we have listed the best episodes a bazillion times so those are the ones i will be watching for sure! :)

  • Jack Spaulding

You can most definitely tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray disks…
Full 1080p looks absolutely stunning and 5.1 surround audio is a thrill even just watching the intro (Kyoshi’s rock flying from one side of the room to the other).

I can not wait to hear what the creators have to say about particular parts (esp for the 4 pt. finally). Things that I could use a tiny bit of behind the scenes intention from the creators – such as :

-Was Vaatu able to rip out Raava because Unaloq had greater spiritual potential?

-Was Korra supposed to lose that fight because Vaatu was at his peak? Due to the Southern Tribe going to war / “terrorist”/hated attacks in Republic City / Varricks greed and theivery? (In my mind, yes, because Vaatu was massive- and Korra just put up a great fight).

-Was Jinora’s rebirth of Raava from her inner light or accompanied by light spirits?

  • Azulaalwayslies

Is it just me, or is there not even a listing for the Blu-ray? All I see at Amazon and Best Buy is an option to pre-order the regular DVD.

  • Sibis

A 30 minute Book 1 recap. I hereby call it “CliffNotes: Legend of Korra Book 1.”

I thought this would be some kind of a joke back then, but they actually did this. Now I really want to know how much they trim down.

    • Sibis

30 minute recap which would cut a ton of drama down, is probably best for those who don’t want the experience to be completely trashed by “Killjoy”.

  • Link9150

    Dat Korra!

    • Sibis

More the reason that Korra needs to change her look. She looks better with her hair down than tied.

Actually, she looks like an entirely different character.

      • Link9150

I think the reason it looks that way is because we’re so used to see her with her hair tied that she looks even hotter with her hair down. If she had her hair down from the start we wouldn’t appreciate it as much.

That being said, I really want her to keep her hair tied though, it’s part of her character. If she gets a hairstyle change I personally just want her clothes to change.

  • Legama

Hey I got the Last Airbender Movie on Blu-Ray. I tried to throw it away to the trashcan, but it mysteriously reappeared on my house.
Shall I burn it with gasoline? or do you think dynamite will be more effective on destroying this piece of radioactive crap.

    • Ariana Moreno

hmmm, haha XD i’d say burn it and strap dynamite to it XD then it will blow up X)

      • Legama

It was a present. But well, it had good intentions.

        • Ariana Moreno

          haha XD yeah buddeh

    • Melanie R.

You could use it as a fancy Frisbee. Or a pizza cutter. :P
My copy of it came for FREE from my local comic shop (a buy 2, get 1 free deal). I said it was for bad movie night. Otherwise, any money that I spent on that “franchise” was spent on my (and my brother’s) movie tickets that day (coincidentally, the day that the Book 2:Spirits sets come out is the 4th anniversary of it coming out in movie theaters) & a TLA Happy Meal (which had the little Momo plushie inside). I still have both the DVD & ‘lil Momo plushie , but re-donated the “Katara” and “Sokka” Happy Meal toys back to my local thrift store after awhile.
I also stopped eating McDonald’s food altogether; it’s BARELY food to begin with. I won’t even go into their “restaurants” to use the bathroom. Their workers are paid & treated poorly, and that’s just the beginning of why I now boycott them (and other fast food chains, by the way).
Sorry for going off topic with a rant, but it needed to be done. ;)

    • Sibis

When I had to watch it, I toned the terribleness of the movie down by changing the TV to monochrome. It really makes the flying rock seem less bad.

  • Melanie R.

Even though I have all of Book 2 on my own DVR (which will be deleted in July), I pre-ordered the DVD; I don’t currently own a Blu-ray player. When the TV in my room (an old one from over 10 years ago) dies, I’ll get a flat screen & then a Blu-ray player. ;)
And besides, someone will be kind enough to list information from the Blu-ray commentaries and/or the commentaries themselves on YouTube and at the Avatar/Korra fan site DongbuFeng. :)

  • razorstar90

The only reason to buy the blu ray for any movie/show is for the special features. I’m really interested in listening to the commentary (that’s the main reason I buy blu ray editions). I want to hear the rationalization of the return of the dredded love triangle. Plus the feature about Tenzin and his siblings will be interesting as well.

    • Sibis

Maybe someone could do an article on what the commentary says.

  • KorraFan7

It sucks that the Blu-Ray has all those special features and the DVD just has a little. That’s what I hate about Blu-Ray :( But I’ll get the DVD because I don’t have a Blu-Ray. I enjoyed listening to the Book 1 commentary. I also want to enjoy Book 2 commentary :D The maker’s were so funny in the Book 1 commentary they made me laugh xD!

  • Aang

I need my card to do anything which is blocked T_T Well i can get hd videos of book 2 jst download them so i wont buy at all mostly.

  • Wyatt

Blu-ray. I bought Book 1 on regular DVD and I sort of regretted it when I saw the special features that were available to me. Plus, Book 2 is a lot more colorful and has slightly better animation overall (with Studio Mir’s work really), so I think it’ll be worth paying the extra cost to see it in 1080p. Beginnings Part 1 and 2 should look especially impressive in full HD.

    • Link9150

Blu-Ray only looks better when it’s live action. Animation has its limits. DVD or Blu-Ray there will be no difference, the cannot get any clearer after DVD. The only reason why Blu-Ray would be worth it is because of the commentary.

      • Wyatt

I agree that live action material looks better on Blu-ray, but from what I’ve seen, 2D animation also looks noticeably better. It isn’t a significant step up in quality, but color palettes stand out more distinctly and there’s an overall crispness to the animation that looks very, very good. Also, the sound quality is slightly (and I do emphasize ‘slightly’) improved. But I’m mostly cashing in for those special features.

  • Sibis

Picture it, if the Giant Korra vs. Giant Dark Avatar fight scene were written by the Regular Show people.

“You’ve Got the Touch” by Stan Bush would play with a lengthy scene of Korra constructing her giant form and flying over to Republic City. More grappling action moves includes Korra using wrestling and MMA moves. Instead of Jinora Dues Ex Machina, Korra delivers a dropkick to the Dark Avatar chest when he’s about to fire a beam. This causes the power to backfire and severely damage him. Then Jinora comes in to bring Raava back which Korra extracts. Dark Avatar goes into a speech while Korra does her Spirit Bending, then Korra tells him to “Step off!” by delivering a chop that dissipates his body.
