Podcast: Thoughts on Books 1 & 2, Expectations for Book 3 and Dark Avatar

Castbender had me on their Podcast yesterday afternoon to discuss The Legend of Korra. More specifically, we talked a lot about the first two Books as well as the expectations for the upcoming season. Some time after, we delved into discussion about the series’ characters and we even answered a few reader/listener questions. All of you probably know by now that I’m not the best Podcaster, so be sure to check out Castbender’s Podcast and listen to me stumble my way through the show.

I’m also very excited to announce that Castbender has been adopted as this blog’s official podcast – we are now, essentially, united as one. If you look at the upper navigation bar, you’ll see a link titled ‘Podcast’. That link will take you to the Castbender side of the blog where you can listen to all of their Podcasts and VLogs. I will be posting their Podcasts on this blog once a week (Wednesday?) so you don’t miss out on their show.

Castbender is made up of three fabulous Podcasters: Tyrell, AJ and Teagan. Their side of the blog is obviously a work in progress, but we’ll have it all set up in a timely manner. Don’t forget to check them out and be sure to listen to their latest show which can be found in a YouTube format below:

  • Aeri

    ooh another podcast :>

  • Isabelle

Korra?! To at least have an inch of character development. please excuse my language but are f**king kidding me?! She is the most developed in the show by far. I’m done.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

      I agree with you there.

      • Isabelle

Haha sorry for blowing up. XD

        • Cast Bender Podcast

          Hey Isabelle,

It might be a bit of a stretch but we believe Korra did develop but at the end of the day she was still just the same character from the first season of not even more “rage mode”. Thanks for your input and listening!

          • Legama

Gotta disagree, Korra did get a lot of development this season, she had a reversed attitude at first, but she became more serious and spiritual at the end of the season. Since the beginning of the series, she has advance a lot.

          • Cast Bender Podcast

More than characters who developed their characters and stories like Tenzin or even Jinora. Korra is just more of the same for the most part.

          • Legama

You know, the problem is that there is less material to work with Korra, we know her past. In the other hand Tenzin, Lin an the others have big stories to tell. Now Jinora was barely developed on Book 1, and then greatly developed on book 2, while Korra’s development has been gradual, but present.

          • Cast Bender Podcast

Fair enough, while I will not go as far to say Korra’s development is even gradual enough as it probably could be thank you for taking the time and discussing it with us! Cheers!

          • Legama

Cheers too, and I’m expecting see you around here a bit more, this discussions get very interesting, and I think you have some very interesting points. :)

          • Cast Bender Podcast

            Thanks Legama!

          • melon lord

I enjoyed listening to your podcast for the first time and look forward to more that you do with the site. I think it has the potential spark more discussion. :)

I can see how this one came off as negative, mostly opinionated, and not based on fact. Perhaps you can back up your opinions a bit more and it wont come off so negative?I know you’ve probably discussed many of these topics before, but this is the first time some of us have heard your podcast – thus our first impression.

For instance, someone mentioned that they wanted an inch of development for Korra, but never really explained why they thought Korra hasn’t developed (nor in the comments here either).

While I completely (yet respectfully) disagree with (and don’t quite understand) the idea that Korra hasn’t developed, I am all ears to hear what you have to say about it.

I am not saying she’s done developing, far from it. She has a long way to go. To say she’s the same character as book one baffles me a bit. Korra’s time in the spirit world is the first thing that comes to mind. There she learned how her emotions effect the world around her. I think she came out of that experience a little more calmed. She was able to make a lot of her decisions from then on with out getting too angry. ie. whether to keep the spirit portals open or not. Yes, she still has a long way to go.

Anyway, good luck and look forward to the rest. :)

          • Cast Bender Podcast

            Melon Lord!

Thanks for taking the time to comment about the show! I for sure get your point of view. The episode was to focus more on Keval during the interview and just touch on some Korra related things! In other episodes we usually back up our claims as it should be! I hope you will listen next week.

            Thanks!

      • Ariana Moreno

I was gonna say, Korra got some development so that was the only thing I didn’t really agree with. XD otherwise, awesome video! :p

  • Link9150

Nice video. Also, Keval, your voice wasn’t what I was expecting hahaha. But it felt great to see you in this interview since we mostly share the same opinions. Great video!

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

      Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Nico

Way too critical about the show. Just be thankful that its there in the first place. And Azula is not an anti-hero, idk what that kid was talking about. she was straight up evil for that whole show.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

I’ll agree that the Podcast did get overly negative. I’ll take the blame for that – sorry. Over the next few months, we plan on taking more of a positive approach in posts just because we’ve already criticized the show enough, It’s time to move on to what we liked.

And thanks for listening and voicing you opinion, by the way. It helps us when writing content.

      • Link9150

I don’t blame you for being honest. I’d rather have an honest opinion rather than bullshit lying to simply please the fans. It’s like you said in the interview; fans like to read someone that’s opinionated rather than a talk head (or whatever expression used). And that’s what’s making me visit your blog every day, the fact that you’re honest and not afraid of telling the truth. Also, you’re not a shipper and that’s rare these days in an ATLA/LOk fandom.

    • Cast Bender Podcast

      Hello Nico,

If you sugar coat everything all the time it isn’t the truth. Cast Bender likes to tell yo the straight facts, we don’t beat around the bush. If you invested a second into other episodes you would come to see we appreciate the show but that doesn’t mean we can’t be critical. As the the anti-hero comment I believe it was a slip of the tongue.

      – Cast Bender

      • KorRava

I’m sorry but they are opinions, not facts.

        • Cast Bender Podcast

What are opinions and facts? I’m commenting on the critical nature of how we analysis the show.

      • Nico

Ok so you love the show but then critique it immensely and then talk about who needs to die on the show because they piss you off too much. And seeing that I come onto a website devoted to Korra I wold say that I’ve devoted more than a “second” to the show.

        • Cast Bender Podcast

You seem to not understand that it was a joke, it isn’t serious all the time, that is part of our tag line. Plus, you’ve listened to 38 minutes of our show which spans over 58 episodes, judge as freely as you please but your judgment isn’t justified. Also, I meant our show, not The Legend of Korra. Lighten up, not everything is serious, you’re no more of an authority than anyone else nor are we “kids”. Have a great day Nico!

          • Nico

I’ve never said I was an authority, I don’t run a blog or have a podcast. I was making an opinion of your SHOW and obviously you can’t take constructive criticism. I’ve only listened to 38 minutes of your podcast and its all I need to listen of it. Keep up the great work!

          • Cast Bender Podcast

Alright Nico, that is the thing we do take constructive criticism, please be aware of the words “constructive criticism”. Farewell!

  • Kailee

    Cool video! (:

And that was ur first time guest starring on their podcast?

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

Yes, that was the first time I recorded with Castbender.

  • Wyatt

Thanks for the honorable mention Keval :)

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

      Much deserved :)

  • PurplePlatypusBear

Wow, that was a great podcast, Keval. It was nice to hear the season basically summed up in half an hour. Just a few opinions that I formed while listening:

I never watched Avatar:The Last Airbender while it was on air, so I wouldn’t know much about it’s online presence, but I just want to say that Korra has a huge online fan base as well. Enough to get the finalies online a week before their premire. Of course, I’m sure there was some extreme buzz about ATLA while it aired, but LoK has some serious online activity as well. And on a side note, I think part of the reason that the “traffic” (which I’m assuming means the amount of comments) has decreased on your site is that you made the forum, which was a great idea by the way. People go here to read the article, then make a topic for it on your forum.

Also, I honestly disagree with the idea of a Dark Avatar. I mean, it wouldn’t keep me from watching the show, but that would probably leave it kind of dry for me. To be honest, a big reason that I think this is that I’m holding out for another Avatar show after LoK (to complete the cycle with earth and fire). If the Dark Avatar was the villian every time, I would definitely get sick of it. It almost seems like and excuse, or an EZ-Pass for the writers. I like seeing fresh, inventive villains in Avatar, like Amon.

And I completely agree with making Varrick a full-time villian. What would be the point of him escaping if he was going to just be omitted from the show? In fact, the whole sub-plot would have been a waste of time, which it kind of feels like at this point. However, in ATLA, I can imagine people felt the same way about the Zuko sub-plot in Book 2 because in the end he just chose evil anyway. At the point between season 2 and 3, fans must have been furious, wanted him to die, and thought the whole thing was a waste of time. But, hey, guess what? It made a huge impact in the third season. Everything righted itself, and it worked out perfectly. I’m just trying to put it in perspective, although I wasn’t with the rest of the fandom at that point. So, yeah, I think the Varrick sub-plot will work out and have an impact that does the show justice.

And by the way, I know exactly what you mean about fire being the best element. It completely is! I mean, if I could choose to be any type of bender, I would be firebending in less than a second. My personality is more waterbender, since I’m not an angry person, but fire is just hands down the best, by far. I can’t explain why. It just is.

Oh, and on a side note Keval, your voice sound EXACTLY like my cousin Thomas’s. O.O weird, because you also kind of look like him and I think you’re the same age.

    • PurplePlatypusBear

Whoops! Sorry this is so long :)

    • Cast Bender Podcast

Thanks for such a large comment PurplePlatypusBear we appreciate your input!

  • Wyatt

I’m a little unsure why a lot of the negative aspects of Book 2 didn’t strike me harder than they did others. Perhaps, it was the quality of content with in each episode (as opposed to the entire season) that really got my attention. I have a feeling that Book 2 will be a season in which the success of the story and characters will deteriorate a bit after a second viewing. But, I’ll save any opinions until I rewatch Book 2 on Blu-Ray.

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

I started to see the flaws when I marathoned the season one day. Seeing everything play out at once is a good way to see the positive and negatives of a series.

      • Wyatt

It’s definitely something I’ll be looking for.

  • blood red rose

I would like to argue about the thing with kids not going on this site some kids actually do I mean I’m a kid but not every body is the same. And when you guys were talking about this show being different it ALMOST put me to tears because we live in a world where being different is a bad thing and it.. I don’t know but to me that was heartfelt and I give a round of applause to keval and cast bender for that. Some day I have a feeling that because of this site that more fandom of not just tv shows but of alot of things can get together and be very sincere and opinionated

Over all it was phenomenal I take my hat off to u guys

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com/ Keval

Thank you for the kind words! In regards to the kids not coming to this site, I was more referring to kids under 10.

      • blood red rose

Hey keval, every time I try to get to the forum the tabs sort of crash . And I have to reload the pages (I know this is off topic sorry!)
