Potential Role for Zuko in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra

Zuko’s character arguably underwent the most character development out of any character in the Avatar series thus far. He went from a whiny, teenage brat who narrowly viewed life to a mature young-adult who put others before himself.

Fortunately for just about every Avatar fan, Zuko has been alive and well during the course of The Legend of Korra thus far. He stepped down as Fire Lord and began to travel the world as an unofficial ambassador for peace.

The mere fact that Zuko was kept alive strongly suggests that we’ll see him at some point during The Legend of Korra. Katara was kept alive and we saw her in the first episode. Aang, Sokka and Toph were deceased but Mike and Bryan still managed to show us their adult counterparts in flashback form. Leaving Zuko out would be a major mistake for Mike and Bryan simply because his character was loved so much. But like I have said multiple times, Mike and Bryan are not dumb: they know what they’re doing.

That being said, I fully expect Zuko to make some sort of appearance during Book 2 of The Legend of Korra, and I think I know a potential role that could suit him well.

By the end of The Last Airbender, it was fairly obvious that Uncle Iroh had a profound influence on Zuko. He was one of the main reasons for Zuko’s transition from an antagonist to a protagonist. Uncle Iroh represented the father figure in Zuko’s life, thus Zuko strived to be much like him.

If Zuko does make an appearance in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra, I’d expect his role to be similar to that of Uncle Iroh’s. I’d also expect him to be the mentor for Korra throughout her adventures in Book 2. The reason for this is because Zuko and Korra have both shared similar personalities at one point in their respective lives. They have both been extremely hot-headed and very fierce, at times. As a result, they can relate to each other.

Tenzin may have seemed to be the perfect mentor for Korra in Book 1 of The Legend of Korra, but who’d be a better mentor for Korra than someone she could relate too? Tenzin is the perfect Airbendering teacher because he’s a Master Airbender himself. But Zuko is the perfect Mentor for an Avatar such as Korra because he fought along side Avatar Aang and was exposed to the learning process that Aang underwent to become a fully realized Avatar.

What type of role do you think Zuko will have if he appears in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra?

I personally agree with your prediction.

Wow- that was one of your best posts yet! Just the other day I was thinking about Zuko and about how he could fit in. I thought about if the Hore Nation got attacked by spirits the Iroh 2.0 would call on the Krewfor back up then we'd see him. I thought of everything in the book but your answer seems the best! Thanks for this and great post!!:)

I appreciate it – I wanted to get a good post published before tomorrow. I live on the East Coast and with Hurricane Sandy coming inland by tomorrow, I don't expect to have power for a bit. So hopefully this post will due for the week.

Maybe I missed it, but how do we know that Zuko is alive in TLoK?

  • Ashes

It was I confirmed by the creators.

Ah! That's exciting! Zuko was definitely one of my favorite characters. Really excited to see more of him (I hope)!

I never thought of Zuko as a mentor for Korra as the Avatar…but that makes sense! More sense than any other theories I've heard of! I first found this blog by searching google for an estimate of when book 2 would debut, and boy am I glad I found you! Unlike anyone else, your opinions/theories have supporting details to back them up. You're a great writer, and amazing at everything Avatar! :)

      Thank you!

I put a lot of work into ensuring that this Blog is easily accessible through Google. I'm glad you found your way here :)

I have a question; hopefully you can answer it: When you're a fully realized Avatar, does it mean that you can bend all four elements or that you've mastered all four elements?

    • http://avatarthelegendofkorra.wordpress.com AdminAvatar

It means you've mastered all 4 elements.

I don't see Zuko as a potential mentor. You're right, he and Korra are very alike, but isn't that more of a disproof? Shouldn't a mentor be different and advanced. And what should he mentoring, anyways?Book 2 is supposed to dive more into the spiritual world of Avatar. I don't think Zuko is much of a spiritual guy.
I guess, if Korra will get a new mentor in Book 2, it will rather be Aang. Much like Avatar Roku was the mentor for him.

I hope Zuko will have a role in the future of TLOK, though. But considering, he would be about in his eightys, I don't have much hope for a very active role. Maybe he'll be some kind of McGuffin, or have a connection to this mysterious Azula-like character, I've heard from – or maybe he'll enter the sun warriors again. Atleast I hope they will have a role in the future of Avatar. :D

Anyway, I'm excited to see what those geniuses will bring us in the future. :)

If Zuko has a role it's bound to be big as the developers of the show know we love Zuko. There (I'm sure of) is going to be some type of firebending with Zuko as his character was so nostalgic to many growing up. I remember hating him at first but seeing him change showed me how much he's so cool. And even though he's 80, so what? Roku and Sozin fought a volcano in their old age…

I'm confused! Is Zuko still alive? how exactly Korra can make contact with Zuko and be his mentor if Zuko is already dead? I thought only the past avatars and the spirits are the only entities in which Korra can make conversation, right? Answers pls.thnx

I think since Tenzin was the best person to teach Korra airbending, Zuko will be the best person to teach Korra about spirits and spiritual growth. He will essentially be Uncle Iroh andGuru Patik rolled in one with a little Zuko flare. Iroh traveled into the Spirit World and met the Sun Warriors. Zuko will be like that to Korra and will give her a little bit of guidance, but not in the same magnitude as Tenzin did.

I will really really really really really love to see him.
