Will Flashbacks in Book 3 of The Legend of Korra Involve Lin?

It’s no secret that the writers of The Legend of Korra have used flashbacks often in order to further the plot of the respective season. Book 1 progressed the season with multiple flashbacks of Aang’s era while Book 2 progressed the season with a two-episode flashback of Wan’s era. Both flashbacks were standout moments of the respective season, and if the writers plan on sticking with what works, don’t be surprised if we continue to get flashbacks in Book 3.

In terms of the content of the possible flashbacks, there are only a few options based on the knowledge we have of Book 3 so far. Character-wise, Book 3 will heavily focus on Lin Beifong and Bumi with a bit more emphasis on Lin Beifong and her family. Naturally, this would make me inclined to believe that any possible flashbacks in Book 3 will involve Lin to some degree.

In fact, the latest Book 3 image we received may be a scene that follows up a possible flashback.

As shown in the picture, Lin’s face is covered in sweat. My belief is that Lin has just woken up from a nightmare, but what if that nightmare is actually a dream of something terrible that happened in Lin’s past?

The dream in itself would technically be classified as a flashback and it could give us some detail regarding Lin’s past. Maybe we’ll get some hints on who her father is?

As of now, there are conflicting reports on whether or not we’re going to get the identity of Lin’s father. At Momocon this past May, Sifu Kisu said that Lin’s father would be revealed while Mike DiMartino said he wouldn’t be revealed at a book signing.

I understand that the most trusted source in this situation is Mike DiMartino, but why would Sifu Kisu lie? I feel like Mike DiMartino would be more inclined to lie in this scenario just to keep the possible reveal a surprise, but I’m definitely conflicted.

Regardless, flashbacks of Lin’s past in Book 3 would be epic beyond belief. How do you think everything will shake out?

  • Eliminator

I would like to see a flashback about Lin and her family and it would fill another gap of the avatar universe.

The big question will always be for me: In which way will Lins past relate to Korras avatar duty. How will it suit into “Change”, which deals about the consequences of Harmonic Convergence.

By the way: Merry Christmas everybody!

By the way II: Keval, *cough* forum opening *cough*

By the way III: Did you notice the big discussion in the previous post about the failed character development of Mako?

    • Heisenberg

      I did. Hahaha!

      • Eliminator

        *facepalm* I didn’t expect this :p

I just realized that yesterday, before our arguments started the comment section held 80 comments, now it holds 361. It’s all thanks to us.. Man, I can’t wait for the forums as well haha

          • Ariana Moreno

oh yeah! but that’s what this is all about! these articles should breed discussion. and it looks like eliminator is sick of us haha XD

          • Heisenberg

Nah, he knows he’s lucky we’re here to argue with him haha

          • Ariana Moreno

hm, yep. X) so what does it mean when your comment has a negative number in the up vote part?

          • Heisenberg

That means you fucked up…real bad.

          • Ariana Moreno

what the hell does that mean?

          • Heisenberg

            Oh, it’s bad… It’s really bad…

          • Ariana Moreno

in the vote up??? what the hell. i don’t’ understand that. pssh, whatever. fuck it

          • Heisenberg

I saw it at first, but now I don’t see it at all… Maybe it’s a small glitch.

          • Ariana Moreno

what the hell ever. fuck it. even it it was ever, who gives a fuck, cause i don’t’. i say what i want

          • Heisenberg

            Someone’s getting pissed…

          • Ariana Moreno

well dude, for real. i didn’t fuck up shit. something else did that cause it’s gone now. there, i’m done doing my rant. i’m good XD

          • Ariana Moreno

oh and by the way, why is this surprising to you? how many times have we been through my temper being a problem?? were you there when we discussed that all? haha shit XD

          • Heisenberg

I wasn’t surprised. I’ve went through your temper problems many times, rough times…

          • Ariana Moreno

alright then. i’m dropping it now so this doesn’t turn into something else.

          • Heisenberg

Like some kind of multi-rant killing spree.

          • Ariana Moreno

what?? haha what the hell XD sure. lets go with that

          • Ariana Moreno

okay, i can’t hold this back anymore. i don’t appreciate the way you talked to me up there. that was rude, and disrespectful to say that, especially on a public sight. talking like that to me is something i don’t take from anyone. i told you this already when we were on that chat site. now, i didn’t wanna bring up personal stuff on here, but i have no choice. you really pissed me off when you said that. i thought you would’ve learned from what happened with us from before, but you haven’t obviously. i don’t want this to turn into an argument, because believe me, i’m tempted to not hold back like i have been. i don’t want to be like that though, so that’s why i would appreciate it if you listened to this, and just take it maturely. yes, i have to work on the way i talk as well, but at least i didn’t say to you what you said to me on here (you fucked up). i don’t take that alright? now if this is gonna mean that we don’t talk at all, even on here, then so be it, but i don’t take this, and i told you i was done with it. i will only discuss with you if you are mature, and talk like a gentlemen with me, otherwise, what i can say is, i “f***ed up by talking to you in the first place, because you should learn how to respect people and watch the way you talk to them. sorry, if i offended you in any way, and if you are still angry about everything that happened, but that’s why i wanted everything to stay neutral as well, if we were to talk at all. so, again, watch your response. i’m simply telling you how i feel. if you don’t like it then too bad. but i dare you to react the way you did back then. it won’t be pretty. so, if you are gonna react, please do it with respect, and without profanity. again, i didn’t want to bring this all up, but it’s bugging me like crazy. i don’t like it when people use words like that with me, especially to be personal on a public site.

          • Heisenberg

Wow… Calm down when I said you fucked up I was simply kidding since you had a negatives in your vote. I didn’t mean anything by it other than that. What did you think I meant?

          • Ariana Moreno

well, if you were kidding, then you should’ve included a XD or a :p or something of that sort to make it look like you were kidding, otherwise what do you expect? it looks like you’re serious. also, even if you were kidding, you really shouldn’t. at least directly at me with that language. i thought you literally mean that i did fuck up with what i said, and it was bad enough to the point of people making my up votes negative. you just came across as serious, and critical. i didn’t know you were kidding. but still please don’t say stuff directly at me okay? it came across as rude. not funny. are you alright with this? because i am telling you how i’m feeling, and nothing else. not trying to start any thing. but remember, i’m aggressive, and i’m ready to defend anything i feel as a threat. which means if i don’t’ like the sound of it or it appears confrontational, i’ll deffinately say something to let people know they’ve crossed the line.

          • Heisenberg

I thought it was obvious enough. But don’t worry I know what I’ll do from now on…

          • Ariana Moreno

            what

          • Eliminator

            It’s a secret :d

          • Ariana Moreno

no haha it’s quite obvious…we both need a break, most likely for good. you just gotta stay away from people who don’t know how to act. I should’ve taken the red flag at the start. but hey, we learn from our mistakes.

          • Eliminator

            I usually dont use “xD”. I prefer these smileys: “:D”, “:)”, “:P”, xP”, “^^”

          • Eliminator

Yeah, it would be boring without people like you :)

          • Heisenberg

Same goes to you. Some friendly arguments keeps things heated and interesting, don’t you think?

          • Eliminator

Why should I be sick of you :p

          • Eliminator

            Good work, guys, hehe.

    • Ariana Moreno

hahaha yeah buddy. that is definitely something that the creators should work on Xp

      • Heisenberg

        Couldn’t agree more.

  • Josh

Who’s ready for a Lin theory? During the end of Book 2 we saw this dark spiritual energy engulf the entire planet, passing through everyone and everything. The creators have hinted that this dark energy will have an effect on all the people of the world. That brings up the question of what will this effect be? My theory is that all the inhabitants of the Avatar World now have a little spec of darkness within them, due to the events of, “Harmonic Convergence.” The darkness inside people would bring about their darkest memories, or it would drive some people to do bad things. The darkness will be what triggers Lin’s nightmares, and she will more than likely have a lot of them over the course of Book 3. Lin’s nightmares will probably be about her family. I think that Lin’s father was Killed/passed away when she was very young. Remember when Grey Delisle said she would be voicing the younger version of an established character? It could either be Lin or Asami, but i’m gonna go with Lin since this season is said to focus more on her. Lin also has two mysterious scars that she could have gotten trying to protect her father.

I know some people might get mad at me for saying this, but I think Toph wasn’t a good mother. If you think about it, it makes since, Aang was a bad Father because he always had other duties to the world, and the same goes for Toph. Being the Chief of police she probably didn’t have much time off; I mean have you seen all the criminals in Republic City. Due to this she probably didn’t get to spend much time with Lin, but when she did get the chance all they ever did was train. If you go back to the first episode of Book 1 you can tell that Lin doesn’t think very highly of her mother, or just doesn’t care. She also doesn’t have any pictures of Toph or any for that matter. And if you guys remember, Toph isn’t very good at showing her emotions.

Lin and Tenzin’s relationship most likely formed due to the fact that they could relate to one another. Both of them were burdened with so much responsibility at such a young age. Tenzin knew he would have to keep Airbending alive, and Lin knew that she had to train to become the knew chief of police.

Back to the two scars on Lin’s face, if they weren’t received in order to try and protect her father, I think she may have gotten them during a training session with Toph. If any of you read the Avatar comics, then you know that in promise we get a glimpse into what type of training methods Toph uses. Also if you go back to The episode “Bitter work,” in ATLA you will really see how strict of a teacher she was.

Well that’s the end of my theory, I hope you all enjoyed it! Here are some pictures of what Toph and Lin’s relationship Might have been like.

    • Eliminator

“During the end of Book 2 we saw this dark spiritual energy engulf the entire planet, passing through everyone and everything.”
Who says, that it was dark spiritual energy? It extended before Vaatu was even free. as i wrote in a post few days ago, the purple wave might just show, how the harmonic convergence looks like in the physical world.

      • Josh

True, but I just associated the color purple with darkness, since purple is one of the main ways that darkness is represented. Even if it isn’t dark energy it will still most likely have a negative effect on the world. What fun would it be if it did nothing?

        • MG

While purple can be used as a symbolism of darkness (it’s shown in multiple occasions: dark spirits are mostly purple, Unalaq’s negative spiritual healing surrounds a person in purple light), it could also symbolise cosmic energy.

In “The Guru”, when Aang was in the midst of unlocking his 7th chakra to connect to the cosmic energy of the Universe, he was shown in space and the surroundings were purple in colour.
Harmonic Convergence occurs when the planets of the solar system lines up together, creating a surge of celestial/cosmic energy that would cause the portals to fuse. The fusion of the portals would then transmit the cosmic energy to the Earth from the poles, bathing it in purple light.

    • Ace

I really hope Toph doesn’t turn out to be a bad parent. But you might be right in a sense. Toph’s parents were overprotective of her, and that’s the main reason she ran away from home. Toph may not have wanted Lin to have to go through the same thing, so she probably wanted to show her affection by toughening Lin up. While I don’t think the scars came from Toph, it is probable that Toph as a parent wasn’t perfect, just because of what she has experienced in her childhood.

      • Heisenberg

I really hope that happens. I want to see Toph’s dark side a little bit more. I want to see her being abusive on Lin to create a little bit more drama. Even though Toph is hard as nails she’s kind of a sweetheart so I don’t know how it’ll happen, we’ll just have to wait and see.

    • ajames123

Are you working on Studio Mir or Nickelodeon?

      • Josh

Haha, why do you ask that?

  • Heisenberg

Hey Keval, I don’t mind if you don’t post my article but I just want to make sure that you at least got it.

    • Ace

It might take a while before he posts it; remember, not only is it Christmas, but Keval does have a life too. Keval posted one of my articles a while back, and while I was excited to see him post it as soon as possible, (and so I completely understand your enthusiasm) you should probably just have some patience. Keval has it and he will post it when he has the time. Hope I don’t sound rude, but I’ve been through the process of writing a guest post before, so just keep an eye out for it, and once he does post it, you’ll be overjoyed.

      • Heisenberg

Thanks a lot for the support, it means a lot. Of course, Keval can take his time, this is his website after all, but I just hope that he at least got my article on gmail, I’m always paranoid on these sort of emails.

      • Eliminator

Ace, you are still alive! :)

        • Ace

Yeah, I’m here, even if I don’t post as often as I used to. I’ll comment if I have something to add to a post, but Season 3 is a complete unknown to me, so I really don’t have any ideas what will happen. I just hope we get to see more of the Earth Kingdom.

  • Sibis

Lin and Bumi might have had some kind of relationship in the past.

It’s really awkward someone like him doesn’t have anyone.

    • Heisenberg

There we go again… As soon as two characters of different genders are single we assume that some romance will happen between them. Lin dated Tenzin… As far as I know Bumi is no Mako so he’ll keep away from her. Also, do you really see Bumi having a relationship with Lin???

      • Eliminator

No, Bumi and Lin definitely shouldn’t have any kind of relationship.

    • Ariana Moreno

not everyone has to be with someone! sheesh, some people just prefer to be single, ever think of it that way? and there’s no way or reason why bumi and lin would have a romantic history. i don’t see any reason why anyway.

      • Eliminator

There wasn’t even a hint for a possible relationship between Bumi and Lin in Book 1 / 2, so I think, they will have seperated plots.

    • Ariana Moreno

oh and another thing is that maybe the creators have too much to worry about, other than pairing up every single character with someone. it would distract fans from the real point of the plot

      • Sibis

Both Bumi and Lin are getting roles in Book 3 which might be linked together.

Since for Lin, it will likely be about her past.

Then my thought is that there could be something in the past between Bumi and Lin. It doesn’t have to be romantic. Just some event or something (like a secret) they went through together for example.

As for why Bumi wouldn’t have a family, I was thinking it was like Tenzin and to help repopulate the Air Benders. Just because Bumi is a non bender, doesn’t change that he’s still carrying Bender genes of his parents.

        • Ariana Moreno

alright. that’s more clear of an idea. but it sounded like at first you were making a claim about the possibility of Bumi and Lin having a romantic history. if it’s something neutral, then cool beans. I wonder what though, cause they didn’t talk at all or give any hints of a connection, unless that was the point so that they could focus on other important things for the plot of book 2, at least that was the goal, but it didn’t go too well. anyway, maybe the creators also wanted to save it all for book 3 too. that’s an interesting idea, though i thought if Bumi would be more involved, it would also have something to do with him and his ties with his family as well. I don’t know at this point. we’ll see.

          • Sibis

It will depend on how their past is.

Aang was busy with Tenzin and RC. Toph would be divided between Lin and RC. Kya would be trained by Katara.

There could be other TLA offsrping.

Then during certain times, Bumi, Kya, and Lin might have hung out together.

I don’t see any sort of a romance short of Lin crushing on Bumi’s awesomeness. Something that lights Tenzin’s fire to win over Lin.

          • Ariana Moreno

hm. whateves. yeah, we’ll just wait and see. it would be interesting, but i hope they don’t get too far off topic for the plot. they should only include things that are important, and that are gonna be crucial for the sake of character development, and the progression of the plot.

  • Ariana Moreno

i would expect to see flashbacks of Lin and her past for sure. it could be with family, friends, love interests, anything. maybe it could reveal how she got that scar on her face! or who her dad is and where he is! by the way when it comes to that, why wouldn’t they reveal who he is? it’s gonna be mostly based on Lin and her family, so what the hell would be the point if they chose to do all of this development with her and build a backstory, when they don’t bother revealing who her father is, and how he played a role in her life, if he did at all. I would think he would be revealed, and that we were told otherwise so that it be a surprise, or it would be more exciting for fans. that is what i’m thinking…anyway, i just hope that her development doesn’t take too much away from Korra, because this is about her dealing with the combo of spirits and humans together as well, and how she will handle her duty as the avatar, despite probably making people happy, but angry as well, since she made a decision that will change everyone’s lives.

    • Sibis

I’m more leaning on the adoption idea. Toph never married or had kids. She adopts Lin after something happens.

Big impact of Lin finding something out about her true family.

      • Ariana Moreno

well, that sounds like a really interesting twist, but to be honest, adoption is for people who want kids, and want to spend time with them. adoption would be for someone who desperately wants a child, and who will dedicate all of their time and effort towards raising them, and being a good parent, the best that they can be. why would toph adopt a child knowing that raising one requires time, dedication, and emotional support, love, and encouragement? if she is busy with the police force, why would she bother adopting someone, if she couldn’t spend time with them? and if she did happen to adopt lin before being on the police force, why would she put her career which is optional, over lin? maybe to help with money, and expenses? i don’t’ know, for me that still defeats the point of raising a child, especially if you know that you can’t provide for them, and if providing for them takes a lot of family time in the process, i wouldn’t bother with adoption. why would she?

        • Sibis

Toph comes from a rich nobility family. Basic necessities for Lin would be covered and there would be nannies/staff on the payroll.

          • Ariana Moreno

alright, so it goes down to why? why would she adopt someone if it was going to be nannies taking care of her? that’s the point i was trying to make.

          • Sibis

There aren’t any orphanages in TLA or RC, exception of just only one in a comic.

So far parent-less children had to make do surviving on their own or try to ally with some group.

A parent-less Lin would have likely had to survive on her own or ally with the wrong group.

It depends on what age Lin would be for Toph taking her in. A baby would be easy for caregivers. Then when Lin is old enough, she could enroll into Toph’s school.

            Two possible situations.

            1. Toph is responsible for an event that left Lin parent-less. So she takes her in instead to leave her to fend for herself.

            2. Toph sees something in Lin and takes her in. Teacher takes in someone to be their pupil. They develop a parent and child relationship.

      • Heisenberg

I’d prefer that. It’s hard to imagine Toph marrying someone and all that. I guess we’ll learn more in her “Rift” comic.

        • Ariana Moreno

it is hard, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have happened. now, granted, she could’ve adopted lin as well! but that’s the one thing I have a hard time understanding, and I made that point below. (yes yes i know, it doest mean that that couldn’t have happened either) but anyway, we’ll just have to see. it is a very good idea though, it would add some new twists to the story.

          • Heisenberg

We’ll just have to see, like you said. I’m pretty sure the creators will pull it off pretty well.

          • Ariana Moreno

hope so. i really am hoping that our hope returns after seeing book 3 for everything to start getting better, and that the series ends off strongly and wonderfully.

          • Heisenberg

All we can do is hope so far. I’m going to be honest, even though I just hate the fact that Book 2 ever existed, I’m feeling optimistic about Book 3 for some reason.

          • Ariana Moreno

maybe because the creators are realizing that book 2 pissed people off, and that they are trying to learn from their mistakes, and they are going to aim for higher quality for book 3. also, you probably feel that way because of the fact that it seems like the plot is gonna have some “real” shit going down, not just some dumbass sub plots like nuk tuk, and mr.detective. or any other useless distractions from what’s really important. it just seems like book 3 will be a more focused story, with a real conflict to overcome, and real goals to accomplish, at least that’s what i feel like from what we’ve been given so far.

          • Heisenberg

Same, that’s why I’m feeling optimistic. I really loved Book 2: Earth of ATLA, so I’m feeling really good about Book 3 of LOK.

          • Ariana Moreno

hm okay. what was your favorite book overall with ATLA? was earth your favorite? is that why feelings of optimism are carrying over to this series?

          • Heisenberg

My favorite ATLA Book, is definitely Book 3, awesome character development, awesome animation, awesome soundtrack and Zuko teaches Aang firebending. As of why Book 2 makes me optimistic, it’s because both of them (Book 2 of ATLA and Book 3 of LOK) happen in the Earth Kingdom. Book 2 was done very well, so I’m expecting some good out of Book 3 of LOK as well.

          • Ariana Moreno

oh alright. yeah, can’t argue with how good that was either

          • Heisenberg

            No one can, haha

          • Ariana Moreno

there was one thing though that i can point out with comparing: so, i’m not too aware if atla had different animators but i do know that i was able to distinguish the art style between two kinds. i do know that i can give you two episodes which should show you what i’m talking about. so for example, take the art in the episode, “Jet”, and compare that to the art in the episode, “tales of ba sing se.” i know there are better examples of that particular style in tales of ba sing se, besides that one episode, but you should know what i’m talking about. were there two different artists/animation studios doing the series? because i do remember thinking that i really liked the way the style of art was done in “jet”, oh and another episode with that same style of art that I like is “Imprisoned”. see what i’m talking about? That’s one thing i can say i preferred when it came to the animators/artists. I liked the way they drew the characters better, as supposed to the way artists depicted them in “tales of ba sing se” for example. If you want specifics, they made the eyes look different, and the ears stuck out a little more. Just watch those episodes I mentioned, and you’ll see a difference, even if it’s just slight. now i don’t know if that mattered to you, but i loved the way they art was in “Jet” and “imprisoned” was for example. just a thought I’d share with you

          • Heisenberg

I know what you mean, if you analyze ATLA’s animation you’ll notice it improves every season. Book 3 had the best animation and was closest to anime style.

          • Ariana Moreno

so it was only one animator? i thought it was two, because those two different styles were very distinguishable and it was consistently done. i honestly thought it was more than one animator. oh and if you happen to wonder why i bring this detail up, it’s cause i’m an artist and i catch these details easily. just in case you were wondering why i mentioned it at all haha

          • Heisenberg

I think it was always one studio. It was what StudioMir was back then. I wouldn’t say it’s different it’s just improved.

          • Ariana Moreno

well i thought it was inconsistent with the style. yeah it improved, but it went back and fourth with styles, and i listed different episodes to show that. they started off good, then changed, then it got better again.

          • Wyatt

Well, there are going to be different animators working on different episodes. I own seasons 1-3 of ATLA on DVD and I’ve watched every commentary episode. One thing that Mike and Bryan mentioned was that, depending on who was animating an episode overseas at Studio Mir, things like character designs (like what you’re referring to) change slightly because of the way they are drawn. Also, the best example of an obvious change in animation I can think of is Zuko’s fight with Zhao in the episode “The Southern Airtemple.” In the commentary, Mike and Bryan explain that they allowed one of the animators to animate it in a style of his choice… with that in mind, if you watch the scene, it looks very anime-esque compared to anything else in the series. Buon natale!!!!

Toph could have a younger sibling that may still be alive.

Possibly the Earth Queen Opal may be from this Bei Fong sibling lineage.

      Opal Beifong, sounds interesting.

btw, the wiki page says, that Toph is “Deceased in The Legend of Korra”
